Our belief
Why Peppula was born
A dog's coat tells you a lot if you know how to read it. Dry or dull. Knots forming close to the skin where your brush never quite reaches.
We didn't know how to read it either. Which brush? How often? Is this normal for the breed, or is something wrong? What should we bring to our vet's attention?
Thousands of videos, all with someone else's dog and tools we weren't sure we needed. Finding a groomer wasn't simpler either: how do you find a good one with a safe environment, or know what a fair price looks like?
And then there's the part no one can answer for you. Is what you're feeding them making a difference?
You choose their food carefully. You add the supplement. But how would you actually tell?
A dull coat, dry skin, excessive shedding — these can be the first signs that something in the diet isn't right. But without knowing what's normal for your breed and without tracking it over time, you're guessing. One check tells you what's there. Routine checks tell you what's changing.
“
So we built what we wanted: one photo, one straight answer. What's in your dog's coat right now. What it needs. What it should cost. And which two tools actually suit that coat, not the forty on the shelf.
Built in Belgium, for pets and the people who love them.

Ever faced this?
Sound familiar?
The moments every dog owner knows — and what changes once you understand the coat.
EVER FACED THIS?
“Why did my groomer charge this much? Am I overpaying?”
— DOG OWNER
Not anymore. You see a fair price range before you book based on breed, coat and local market guidance.
Peppula explains.
EVER FACED THIS?
My dog's coat used to shine. Now it just looks... flat.
— GOLDEN RETRIEVER OWNER
A Golden's double coat should have a natural sheen. When it goes flat, there are reasons and they're not all the same. Upload a photo. Our wellness insights check it against your breed's expected coat and help you understand what to focus on.
Peppula explains.
EVER FACED THIS?
You bought the brush the shop recommended but it did not work out for your dog.
— FIRST-TIME OWNER
Not anymore. You understand what actually suits the coat and make an informed choice, plus the pro specs your groomer would use.
Peppula explains.
EVER FACED THIS?
There's a spot on my dog's skin. Should I panic?
— WORRIED OWNER
Don't panic, not every spot is a problem. Take a picture of the spot to send to your vet. You can also run a dedicated skin check using our coat check, and we’ll share the observations so you can pass them along to your vet.
Peppula explains.
EVER FACED THIS?
My dog gets matted way too fast. I can't keep up.
— DOODLE OWNER
Now you know exactly where matting starts on your breed — behind the ears, armpits, sanitary area. Focus there first to keep things manageable.
Peppula explains.
EVER FACED THIS?
I changed my dog's daily food. How do I know if it suits them long term?
— DOG OWNER
Give it 4–8 weeks. Look for firm, formed stools that are easy to pick up, steady energy, a vibrant coat and a stable weight. Regularly check your dog's stool and coat to see how the food is working over time.

Questions owners ask
Is it really free?
Yes. The coat check is free and there's nothing to install, just upload a photo. We built this to help dog owners understand their dog's coat and wellness.
Does this replace my groomer?
Never. It helps you understand your dog's coat and talk to your groomer as an informed client. Your groomer's hands-on judgement always wins. Think of it as preparation you learn what to ask, they know what to do.
Does this replace my vet?
No. We observe visible coat and skin features, we never diagnose. If we detect skin observations like redness, hair loss, or lumps, we recommend you consult your veterinarian. Your vet examines, tests, and diagnoses. We just help you notice things early.
What does "Worth showing your vet" mean?
We're cautious by design. Any observation outside of regular coat grooming on the skin, eyes, ears, teeth, or paws is flagged as "worth showing your vet." Even if it looks minor. A photo sees the surface but can't tell what's behind it. It could be completely normal, seasonal, or something worth a quick look. We'd rather you mention it and hear "it's fine" than miss something early. Your vet can tell you in a moment whether it needs attention or not.
How accurate is a photo assessment?
Our AI is tested on thousands of real dog images and performs above 90% on breed and coat detection. But AI can be wrong, it observes and assists, it doesn't diagnose. A photo can miss what hands-on inspection catches. Always verify with your groomer for coat care and your vet for anything skin or health related.
What happens to my photo?
Your photo is used to produce your report. We strip location and device metadata (EXIF) before processing. Coat Check photos are deleted after 30 days unless you save the check to your dog's profile; your report stays available through its private link. Please keep people and house numbers out of the photo. We never sell your data. See our privacy policy for details.
What data do you keep?
We keep your report (breed, coat type and observations) so you can open it again, and if you save it your dog's profile and timeline, until you delete them or your account. Your email is used to send your report and, if you sign in, for your account. We never sell it or use it for marketing unless you opt in. See our privacy policy for details.
Can I use this regularly to track my dog's coat?
Yes that's exactly what it's designed for. Upload a photo every few weeks or before a grooming appointment. Over time, you'll see trends: is the coat improving, are certain issues recurring, is a product making a difference? Tracking is more valuable than a single check.
What if no issues are found?
Good news: nothing unusual was visible in your photos. A full-body photo shows the coat surface. A close-up can show more detail, such as skin texture, hair roots and specific areas. But even with both, a photo can't feel what's underneath: hidden tangles, bumps below the surface or changes that need touch to detect. Check your dog's coat by hand regularly, and continue routine visits with your groomer and vet. A clear photo check is a good sign, not a clean bill of health.
What if we could not find a dog in your photo?
Every photo goes through checks to confirm that it shows a real dog, and those checks can sometimes be stringent. Try again in well-lit conditions with your dog's full body and features clearly visible. If you add a close-up, include it alongside the full-body photo. If your dog is still not recognized, email info@peppula.com and someone from our team will help.
